Classic Clothing for "Mature" Tall Women

I was sent an email from Laura, requesting help for her Mother.
"Mom is a "mature" woman looking for stylish age appropriate clothing. She is tired of only being able to find low-cut, hip slung pants and needs some ideas on how to dress in classic pieces. She wears a size 18, is 6'3" and has wide hips."
Here is a visual of what I recommend. The following pieces can all be mixed and matched to create different looks.:

  • Coldwater Creek's tab sleeve cardigan - I have this lightweight cardigan. It is a hip length, has a nice shape and I love the roll sleeves as they hit me right above the elbow.
  • For jeans, I recommend a wide leg trouser style. They will balance out wide hips and still look hip. Get them in a flattering dark wash, and free of nicks or abrasions. The pair above is a pair of custom made jeans from Indi Denim. If you want the above style it is in their design vault as "Dark Trouser Fit" designed by DTF. It has a wide leg, average waist, wide leg and 3" cuff.
  • Any of Eddie Bauer's wrinkle resistant tall shirts are always a great option in classic styles that will look beautiful for years to come. I especially like the 3/4 sleeve styles.
  • Eddie Bauer's mercer fit wrinkle-resistant tall pants have a 35" inseam, are fuller through the hip and thigh and are wrinkle-resistant - they will always look terrific.
  • eShakti sells affordable custom made clothing for women. Their flowing tops and tunics are stylish for all ages. You can customize the length and size and even change the sleeves to whatever style you love.
  • Chadwick's straight-leg pants are also a nice shape for wider hips. They have a bit of stretch for comfort.

Men's Custom Dress Shirts With 40 Inch Sleeve Length

I just discovered Proper Cloth - a store that allows you to create men's custom dress shirts with a sleeve length up to 40" long and neck sizes up to 18". Here's a unique feature about this store - say you have a shirt that fits you perfectly from one of your favorite stores, but you may want to tweak it just a little. They have a special feature called "similar brand sizing" where you can choose from 21 name brand stores and make your shirt fit like theirs. I'm not sure how those stores feel about that, but it's a great way to get a customized shirt that way you like it. The custom dress shirts at Proper Cloth start at $90.

Diary of a Tall Fashionista: Custom Made Clothing for Tall Women

Custom Made Clothing for Tall Women
    by Tiffany DeLangie
Tall Fashion Writer for Tall Clothing Mall

Whenever people speak of flawless fashion, invariably the word “alteration” comes into play. Regardless of how the worlds of fashion and retail have evolved, the reality is we are not built like mannequins. Having done some modeling, I am keenly aware of what you don’t see in the catalogues- the double sided tape, the binder clips pulling the shirt tighter around the waist, the clothespins grabbing the extra fabric of the pants, the stylist scurrying to pull, tug, and adjust after each camera snap, or the photoshopping that eradicates any leftover imperfections. Certainly there are more offerings of plus, petite, and tall sizes and I am grateful for those retailers and designers who realize we are not all 5’7”, 110 pounds, curve deficient, and perfectly proportioned. However there are still areas of opportunity to achieve a better fit.

I myself have gone the alteration route lately and have had some luck…and some misfortune. Why not skip alteration and go straight to custom made clothing? We all have that friend who has returned from the orient with custom made clothing. And how much do we hate it when we ask “where did you get that?” and the answer is “Bangalore.” Wouldn’t it be fabulous if such services were available to us at a reasonable price, sans a trip around the globe? The good news is it is! It takes some investigation but there are many options out there for reasonably priced and risk free custom made clothing.

One of the main reasons to try custom made clothing may surprise you: that reason is cost. Many of us assume “custom made” means out of reach, but that isn’t so. As more retailers, designers, and entrepreneurs recognize a niche market consisting of people who aren’t satisfied with ill fitting clothing, an entire industry is on the rise. Increased competition means lower prices. And while some may cringe at the term “outsourcing,” in this case think of it as a friend not a foe. Don’t forget to consider how much you spend on items you don’t wear primarily due to fit (or lack thereof). We’ve all done it before; been blinded by the clearance price tag to the fact that those pants are two inches too short and two sizes too small…or the cuffs on that shirt barely reach our wrists and our clever idea of cutting the sleeves to make them three quarter length never really panned out. If you are anything like me you could go into your closet and grab handfuls of clothes that flaunt flaws rather than flatter. I dare you to add up how much you spent on that handful. Most likely it will be more than you bargained for.

Sure you may get lucky with an item that fits perfectly from time to time (and when that happens don’t you chide yourself for not buying two?!). But really, how often are we so lucky?! If you are fortunate enough to buy designer clothes then maybe it happens more often for you than for most. But even Oprah admits to having many of her clothes tailored, and seriously if Oprah’s designer duds don’t fit her perfectly off the rack do you really think that it will happen for those of us whose “favorite things” don’t consist of a $1500 TOYWATCH? Not to be Debbie Downer, but I’m guessing no! Custom made clothing is really the only way to get a perfect fit. And while our net worth might not exactly rival Oprah’s we can look like a million bucks if we invest in items that fit us to a [tall] tee!

Women's Tall Clothing- 5 Simple Solutions

    By Krista Mayne

So what’s hot right now in the tall clothing department? Is there such a thing as being able to wear fashionable clothing when you are tall? I used to think that trendy tall clothing was impossible to find.

Over the last few years, many retailers are adding longer-length items, but good luck finding them in their normal stores in the mall! Most of the tall sizes are found only through catalogs or online. Here are a few great tall clothing solutions:

    1. Layering- use a longer length t-shirt or camisole to wear under any shirt. There are many fashionable companies that supply these now.

    2. Specialty tall clothing stores will be your best option- as they make clothing specifically to fit your body type, such as special tall plus size clothing, which is a really hard size to find.

    3. Custom made clothing is another great option. That way you can get tall clothing made to your exact measurements for your tall stature. You may think that tall custom-made clothing is expensive, but surprisingly, it is quite an affordable option. Custom clothing is available for tall swimsuits, tall jeans, tall chinos, custom made shirts and blouses, and larger size hats.

    4. Tunics are really hot this year, which is great news for the tall sized lady. Some tunics are just long enough to make it look like a normal sized shirt on us. Others are quite long. Tunics are available in all kinds of fabric choices from basic t-shirts to designer evening blouses.

    5. A great tall style trend right now is to add something shiny to your outfit. A great wide silver belt or a pair of gold shoes is a great way to dress up an average outfit. Big metal hoops look great on taller statures.

When it comes to shopping, tall women may have to search a little longer than most. The good news is, that tall clothing finally exists and the choices are growing more every season.

Visit Tall Clothing Mall at http://www.tallclothingmall.com/ - a great resource for tall men and tall women looking for tall clothing, plus size clothing, big and tall clothing, tall maternity, and large size shoes. This website was created by Krista Mayne, after she became frustrated by the amount of time she spent trying to find tall clothing.
