Tall Women May Have Higher Risk of Cancer

A new study just came out July 20th, that suggest that tall women may have a higher risk of cancer. The study suggest that for every 4 inches of height, your risk of developing cancer rises by 16 percent. The Million Women Study was conducted by the University of Oxford in England. You can read the findings here.

What do you think of this study? Don't panic, just thought you'd like to see this.

Jeff & Erin's Save the Date

I just saw the following video over at Sarah Vain & Tall's Blog. I think it's well done and worth watching.

My husband is 2 inches taller than me. When I was dating height was really important to me and I really stressed out that "Mr. Right" may end up being shorter than me. It was a big deal to me. Two of my best "tall friends" have married shorter guys and they are just as happy as anyone I know. Love often comes unexpected and I think we put too much emphasis on looks or the world's defination of what is right or wrong.
I think the video above took guts and is well made. I'm proud of them for wanting to proclaim their love for each other to the world. Let's hear what you think about tall women marrying shorter guys.

What do you think of "Ginormica"?

I went to see the movie "Monsters vs. Aliens". Overall I thought it was pretty cute. For those who haven't seen it, the premise is that Susan is hit by a meteor and is transformed into a giant woman called "Ginormica". At first she detests her height, but then learns to tolerate it and then finally she grows to love it!
I think it's a pretty good message for us tall women as most of us have gone through the same cycle. When I was a jr. high age, I hated being taller than everyone. In high school I learned to tolerate it and began to feel comfortable in my own skin. Now it seems the older I get, the less I care what people think about me. I have embraced my height by creating Tall Clothing Mall and I hope to inspire other tall teens and tall women to make the best of the assets they have inherited! If you have seen the movie, what did you think of Ginormica?

Enter to Win a Denim Skirt

I recently came across Style J Skirts as a reader to this blog recommended them to me. Actually it was perfect timing as I was looking for a longer length denim skirt. I placed my order and was surprised as how fast I received it (just 2 days).
I ordered this long denim skirt.

Although they offer tall denim skirts (a great option for us tall women), I found the measurements long enough on this regular size. I didn't want my skirt dragging the ground and found the length for be about 3 inches above my ankles. Perfect! The picture doesn't do the detail on this skirt justice. The back has cute heart grommets on the sides of the pockets. I like the slight A frame as it is figure flattering.
If you would like to win a denim skirt from Style J skirts, just post a comment below this post. On May 29th, I will randomly choose one comment to receive the style of skirt you choose in the size you want!

Long Tunics are Still Hot!

Long tunics are still hot this season and are a great option for tall women. Tunics look terrific over tall leggings and skinny jeans. Whether you wear a traditional tunic or a tunic dress, either one is fine and allows you to extend your wardrobe choices when you can't find a "tall size shirt." We have just added quite a few more long tunics to Tall Clothing Mall from a variety of online stores.

Custom Made Jeans Review

The following review is from a Jheri in Denmark, a 6'3" tall woman.

Being tall and thin I can't find jeans that fit off the rack. I live in København, Denmark and usually buy the longest jeans I can find and then go to a good tailor to make them really fit. About two years ago someone told me about makeyourownjeans.com. Their business model is to give you many choices and (hopefully) use enough measurements to get a very good fit.

The choices are almost bewildering. You'll find something, but it would be nice to have fabric samples to get a better idea of what you are dealing with. You select gender, the fit, and give measurements - waist, seat, thighs, knee, inseam, outer length, front rise, and back rise. You tell them if you want stretch fitting or not. There is a comment section for special instructions. If you feel these measurements can describe you pretty well, you will probably get a good fit. A friend of mine with an extremely hour glass shaped body told them about this in the special instructions but the finished pair were not good.

My feeling is that thin and average tall women should be ok. Photos show you how to take the measurements. I find it very difficult to do this by myself and have a friend help. It is even better if you go to a good tailor. Being off a little can make a big difference, so work on getting it right! The first time I ordered they would not accept payment from my country so I had to go through a friend's account. The information goes off to India and the finished jeans are air freighted back to you.

My first pair took seven weeks and my second pair took about a month. Waiting seven weeks is very difficult. My first pair of custom made jeansfit about the same as the best rack jeans I can find and the quality of material and construction was good. I had some special instructions that they ignored and, getting in touch with them, they said that they really only pay attention to the basic measurements. My friend with the hour glass body heard the same thing when she wrote back to them. I adjusted some measurements a bit for the second pair and the fit was even better. It wasn't perfect, but good enough that I was happy. I'm almost 6'3 and have a 37" barefoot inseam. The first pair were 37" inseams and the second were about 40" for some heels. I can find 37" inseams and get them looking good with tailoring, but not 40" inseams, so I was happy. The price is low by Danish standards even with the shipping, so I will probably try again. My curvy friend was not happy. Neither of us liked their customer service. I would recommend buying a test pair to see how it works rather than several pairs all at once. It think it is important to see how many measurements are used and decide if that is enough to describe you.

Thanks Jheri for your in depth review of makeyourownjeans.com .

On a side note, I also ordered a pair of custom made jeans from them as I wanted a pair of tall white jeans and couldn't find what I wanted. I thought they turned out pretty well. I did hate waiting about 6 weeks to receive them, but overall it was worth the money. Visit Tall Clothing Mall for more choices in custom made jeans.

Diary of a Tall Fashionista: Custom Made Clothing for Tall Women

Custom Made Clothing for Tall Women
by Tiffany DeLangie
Tall Fashion Writer for Tall Clothing Mall

Whenever people speak of flawless fashion, invariably the word “alteration” comes into play. Regardless of how the worlds of fashion and retail have evolved, the reality is we are not built like mannequins. Having done some modeling, I am keenly aware of what you don’t see in the catalogues- the double sided tape, the binder clips pulling the shirt tighter around the waist, the clothespins grabbing the extra fabric of the pants, the stylist scurrying to pull, tug, and adjust after each camera snap, or the photoshopping that eradicates any leftover imperfections. Certainly there are more offerings of plus, petite, and tall sizes and I am grateful for those retailers and designers who realize we are not all 5’7”, 110 pounds, curve deficient, and perfectly proportioned. However there are still areas of opportunity to achieve a better fit.

I myself have gone the alteration route lately and have had some luck…and some misfortune. Why not skip alteration and go straight to custom made clothing? We all have that friend who has returned from the orient with custom made clothing. And how much do we hate it when we ask “where did you get that?” and the answer is “Bangalore.” Wouldn’t it be fabulous if such services were available to us at a reasonable price, sans a trip around the globe? The good news is it is! It takes some investigation but there are many options out there for reasonably priced and risk free custom made clothing.

One of the main reasons to try custom made clothing may surprise you: that reason is cost. Many of us assume “custom made” means out of reach, but that isn’t so. As more retailers, designers, and entrepreneurs recognize a niche market consisting of people who aren’t satisfied with ill fitting clothing, an entire industry is on the rise. Increased competition means lower prices. And while some may cringe at the term “outsourcing,” in this case think of it as a friend not a foe. Don’t forget to consider how much you spend on items you don’t wear primarily due to fit (or lack thereof). We’ve all done it before; been blinded by the clearance price tag to the fact that those pants are two inches too short and two sizes too small…or the cuffs on that shirt barely reach our wrists and our clever idea of cutting the sleeves to make them three quarter length never really panned out. If you are anything like me you could go into your closet and grab handfuls of clothes that flaunt flaws rather than flatter. I dare you to add up how much you spent on that handful. Most likely it will be more than you bargained for.

Sure you may get lucky with an item that fits perfectly from time to time (and when that happens don’t you chide yourself for not buying two?!). But really, how often are we so lucky?! If you are fortunate enough to buy designer clothes then maybe it happens more often for you than for most. But even Oprah admits to having many of her clothes tailored, and seriously if Oprah’s designer duds don’t fit her perfectly off the rack do you really think that it will happen for those of us whose “favorite things” don’t consist of a $1500 TOYWATCH? Not to be Debbie Downer, but I’m guessing no! Custom made clothing is really the only way to get a perfect fit. And while our net worth might not exactly rival Oprah’s we can look like a million bucks if we invest in items that fit us to a [tall] tee!

Visit Tall Clothing Mall for our favorite styles of custom made clothing.

Tall Shapewear

There has been so much buzz over the past couple of years about great underclothing products that help you look slimmer. The bummer for tall women, is that most of these products are not designed for in tall sizes. Today I found shapewear for tall women. Finally a designer that realizes that one size does not fit all! Donna Karen's tall shapewear items are proportioned with longer seams allowing for a better fit. The following tall shapewear items are available at Nordstroms.

Funny Tall Story

Today I went grocery shopping. The local store is being remodeled and so some of the isles are pretty tight together. I bribed my two year old with a balloon so he would be good while shopping. When he chose his balloon it was between "Pirates of the Carribbean" or "Barbie". We went with Pirates. Unbeknownest to me, the balloon plays music and plays it loud. As we got to the end of a skinny food isle, right as we were turning the corner the balloon music came on in it's glory. At the same moment, a little old woman was also turning the corner. She saw me, in my 6'1" intimidating size and the balloon blaring and she literally jumped a foot. The look on her face was sheer horror. I felt kind of bad, but what do you do? I have been laughing ever since. It's not often you run into a woman as tall as me in my small town and have a balloon blare at you in your face. Poor lady. Are tall women intimidating? Yes, but at times it adds some humor to all of our lives.
