What Type of "Tall" Are You? - Poll

The most ridiculous thing I ever see are signs that say "one size fits all". Are you telling me I should wear the same size as my 5'3" tall mother-in-law? I DON'T THINK SO! We learned years ago to never go clothes shopping together.
And, you can't slap a tag on clothes labeled "tall" and expect it to fit all tall people. There are all kinds of different tall shapes and sizes. My biggest pet peeve is when clothing stores stick a "tall" tag on and don't include a tall size chart. Tall inseams can vary from 31" - 42" long. It can be very confusing to sort it all out.
Here we go with generalization again, but I think for the most part, all of us tall people can be sorted into one of the following categories of different tall body types.
  1. All Long Legs. Yep, you have mile long legs. Your legs make up your height. You could have an average torso length or even a short torso length.  A lady at a conference started a conversation with me and told me that she had a 37" inseam length. I wouldn't even have considered her "tall" as she may have been around 5'7". I didn't believe her, so she pulled up her long tunic to her waist and sure enough she had really long legs and an almost non-existent torso.
  2. All Long Torso - You may have average length legs or even short legs. Take Mike, from Twitter. He is 6'8" long with just a 32" inseam. I mentioned to him that's the longest torso length I've ever heard of. He agreed and finding long enough tops is a real challenge. You poor people have a challenge fitting in cars and seats as they just aren't made for your long backs.
  3. Balanced Tall - This is the group of people that have both long legs and long torsos. I fall into this category as I am 6'1" tall and have a 35" inseam length. My torso is also long and tall shirts are needed also.
Let's see where you fall in the spectrum of tall? Please take our survey.

Can REM Sleep Make You Tall?

Mr. Tall spent last night in the hospital doing a sleep study. You know - where they hook dozens of probes up to you and then expect you to sleep deeply so they can monitor you. Right!
Anyway, he had a conversation with the tech guy about kids and how some of our kids sleep deeply, but others are light sleepers.
The sleep tech said that you need to get into a deep REM sleep stage in order to grow as that is when your body does all of its' growing. I found this interesting as I sleep so well that an earthquake couldn't wake me at times.
I must have done a ton of REM sleeping as a kid and during puberity. So I told Mr. Tall that from now on, he needs to wake me every hour so I don't have a chance to enter into REM sleep as I don't want to grow any taller at this point.

Martha Stewart Tall Show Recap

For those of you who may have missed the "Martha Stewart Tall Show", here is a recap.

  • Arianne Cohen, the author of "The Tall Book: A Celebration of Life From On High" discussed advantages tall people have such as, on average earning more than co-workers. She also claimed that people around the world have the same height potential, but that good nuturition and health can help you be taller. I'm not sure if I entirely agree with her height nutrition claims, but I haven't done enough research. It seems to be genetics in my family.
Check out the website http://www.seatguru.com/ next time you are traveling. Fly on airlines that have at least 34" between seats to allow more leg room.
  • Lisa Butcher of Long Tall Sally put on a women's tall fashion show. To see the fashions featured on the show, click here.
  • Martha Stewart showed the butcher block kitchen counter we previously blogged about.
  • Alain Roby, a pastry chef, made a very tall cake.

I enjoyed the show, but would have liked to have more discussion with tall people and issues we face or advantages we enjoy! I would have loved to be there!
What did you think of the show?

Got Tall Children?

If you are tall, chances are you will have tall children too! 3 of my children are above average on the growth charts and the 4th is extremely tall and thin. Sometimes the slim pants need to be extra slim, and we always have to buy a bigger size just to get the length. Sound familiar?
Today I heard about a store that carries clothing for tall children. Stringbeans Clothing (appropriately named) carries long and lean pants for boys and girls. They also have a unique product called Cufflinx™ that you can use to add a cuff to the bottom of existing pants to add extra length. Choose from 20 different patterns.

The World's Tallest Man

If you think you are tall, perhaps you're short compared to the world's tallest man. The "Today Show" had Sultan Kosen, the world's tallest man on their show this morning with the Guinness Book of World's Records to present him a plaque as the "worldest tallest man." Standing at 8'1" tall, Sultan lives in a small town in Turkey.
He was diagnosed with an overactive pituitary gland condition that caused him to grow uncontrollably. Sultan had a tumor on his eye that was putting pressure on his pituitary gland. The tumor has now been removed.
Sultan says, “Up until now, I’ve really had a difficult life, but I’m happy. From now, I’m really going to have it a lot easier.”
You can read the entire transcipt here. We wish Sultan well on his world tour!

Tall Clothing Mall's New Feedback Friday

We get quite a few emails of suggestions for tall stores, and various other products. So starting once a week we will have Feedback Friday -featuring some of the top emails we have received. As always, you can leave comments below blog posts or send us an email at admin@tallclothingmall.com.

From Jheri- regarding Ginormica
"I was very shy in school being too tall, too thin, too pale and too hard of hearing. I used it as an excuse to go into my own shell and felt sorry for myself. The fact that I was the tallest in my family by the time I was 12 didn't help much. But I did improve and by the time I was 20 or so, I found that I was proud of what I looked like and my height."
"When I run into a teenager who is tall I tell them to get involved in some activity in school. It can be anything, but something where others will recognize and value their efforts. It gives them a better sense of value."
Thanks Jheri for your great suggestions and words of wisdom.

Judy suggested a few tall stores:
"Like your site - very informative. Looking forward to exploring it further. I would like to tell you about my favorite store (I didnt see it on your site yet - you should really get it on) it is called Long Legs Fashions For Tall Women www.longlegs.ca . I have bought so much stuff from them and the shipping and customer service is wonderful. The quality of the garments exceeded my expectations. You should look into them and www.simplytall.net. I have purchased a few things from them too that i have been happy with. I'll let you know if i think of any more things that are good for the tall woman."
Thanks Judy!

What do you think of "Ginormica"?

I went to see the movie "Monsters vs. Aliens". Overall I thought it was pretty cute. For those who haven't seen it, the premise is that Susan is hit by a meteor and is transformed into a giant woman called "Ginormica". At first she detests her height, but then learns to tolerate it and then finally she grows to love it!
I think it's a pretty good message for us tall women as most of us have gone through the same cycle. When I was a jr. high age, I hated being taller than everyone. In high school I learned to tolerate it and began to feel comfortable in my own skin. Now it seems the older I get, the less I care what people think about me. I have embraced my height by creating Tall Clothing Mall and I hope to inspire other tall teens and tall women to make the best of the assets they have inherited! If you have seen the movie, what did you think of Ginormica?

Hotel Rooms for Tall People

I have never thought about searching for hotel rooms for tall people as most beds are made long enough for me. However, this could be an uncomfortable problem for extra tall people. I have heard of some people pulling up a chest or table at the end of the bed to accommodate long legs that are hanging off of the bed. What a pain!

I was looking through a blog called, "Tales of a Tall Girl" and noticed that she had a link to Kimpton Hotels. They have specially made 96 inch long beds made for tall travelers. You have to ask for "a tall room" when making your reservation. View more info and cities that have hotel rooms for tall people.

Greetings from Disneyworld

I haven't blogged over the last few days because I am currently vacationing at Disneyworld. I am having a blast and have not had the time to work on my computer very much. I must say that I would love to see a "What Not to Wear" show done at Disneyworld. I have seen some pretty scary outfits! However, I have been very impressed with the tall community. For the most part, most of the tall people are dressed very nice. Great job everyone! I have been happy to be tall here for a couple of of reasons.
My husband and I seem to be intimidating when pushing the stroller and most people will move out of the way. It also helps that we have my tall father-in-law here. I can also see everything - from shows to looking for my children when they wander away. Being tall definitely has it's advantages!

Men's 37" Inseam Tall Jogging Pant & Jacket

I get lots of requests for tall workout pants for thin men. Not all men are big and tall sized. I'm having a few problems finding MT pants, but did find one that I posted previously here.
Just so you know, all men's tall workout pants vary by inseam length and many times you have to call the individual store to get the length. Tonight I came across a tall jogging pant set (item # #63532) in a 37 inch inseam length. It is made of microfiber and is available in LT-4XLT.

Tall Shapewear

There has been so much buzz over the past couple of years about great underclothing products that help you look slimmer. The bummer for tall women, is that most of these products are not designed for in tall sizes. Today I found shapewear for tall women. Finally a designer that realizes that one size does not fit all! Donna Karen's tall shapewear items are proportioned with longer seams allowing for a better fit. The following tall shapewear items are available at Nordstroms.

"You Can't Get a Show Pony When You Come from Clydesdale Stock."

I thought I'd share a funny quote with you today. A while ago I was visiting my aunt and uncle. My aunt was nagging her adult daughter about needing to lose some weight. Finally my cousin turned to my aunt and said, "You can't get a show pony when you come from Clydesdale stock." I about fell over as it was so funny.

So, over the years I have thought about this statement greatly. We can't change our genes. I have been tall my whole life. I enjoy it now, but it wasn't fun being 3 inches taller than the tallest boy all through elementary school and junior high school. Our body shape is greatly determined by our genes. Even when I am in perfect shape, I will never be a size 10. I am 6'1" and I have had 4 children. I have to fight my genetic composition every day as I come from a family that gains weight easily. I work hard at being healthy. It's okay if I have hips, in fact I think they are attractive on my body. I enjoy being tall- now. I am so thankful that we finally have wonderful women's tall clothing choices as that has not always been the case.

Let's be happy with the bodies we were given. We can accentuate the positive by dressing ourselves in clothes that are figure flattering which sometimes means forgoing the latest trend. I look ridiculous when I follow some of the latest fashion trends- so I work hard at finding classic pieces that look fabulous on my tall stature. By the way I think Clydesdales are beautiful!
